This is a photograph of a pre-spawn male brook trout from Gravel Bank Pool, the Kennebago River in Western Maine. Gravel Bank is known mainly as a landlocked salmon pool, but the deepest hole, just before the tail out, will hold some large brook trout. I really love the way the dark water in this shot sets off the intense, brilliant colors and precise physical detail of the fish. From childhood I have always thought of the native, wild brook trout as the most beautiful fish in the world. This image captures all that late September fishing on the Kennebago has come to mean to me, seclusion, magnificent scenery, wildlife sightings and best of all, the camaraderie of my closest fishing friends. It doesn't get any better.
